Who is singing? is a 3D simulation created for desktop and VR, where users can roam freely in the world to find and identify various birds just by their voice. In order to do so, one must catch a bird with a ball and assign it in a corresponding database, represented by the "Book of Birds", which serves not only as virtual dictionary but as menu and guide at the same time. Currently, users can select 1 out of 3 scenarios, each including different visuals and bird species: a tutorial level, a forest and floating islands.
The underlying gamification concept was created as a result of the tedious identification tasks done at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. The institution mainly deals with the species of birds and their entire environment in the field of biosystematics. One of the many tasks of the employees is to assign recorded bird songs to the respective bird species. The audio files often contain additional background and other noise, which makes it almost impossible for autonomous algorithms to uniquely identify the birds' voices. For this reason, the identification step is carried out directly by the employees. In cooperation with the University of Applied Sciences Mittweida, this project was started to raise the assignment of the birds to a correspondingly playful level.
This simulation was created by a small team of 6 people that worked on it for 10 months as part of their study program. 3 members, including myself, continued the development for 3 months as part of a research internship. My job consisted of all engine-related tasks and simple programming tasks with a focus on gameplay mechanics. I wrote the underlying code in C# and created the UI, particle effects and levels within Unity. I also took on project management, game design and level design tasks.
